Obituary for Dr. Yancey Culton, Jr.

DURHAM: Dr. Yancey Culton Jr., 89, passed away on June 14, 2017 at Brookdale Meadowmont Assisted Living in Chapel Hill. He was born in Greensboro, the son of the late Yancey Goelet Culton and Gladys Clark Culton. In addition to his parents, Dr. Culton was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Stabler Culton; sons, Yancey Culton, III and Clark Elgar Culton; and granddaughter, Maria Culton.

Dr. Culton graduated from Guilford College in 1950. He attended Duke University’s School of Medicine from 1952 to 1956. He did his Internship/Residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Duke University Medical Center from 1956 to 1960. Dr. Culton honorably served as a Major in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1968. In 1968 he joined what is now Durham Obstetrics and Gynecology and the medical staff at Watts Hospital. At Watts he chaired the Department of OB/GYN and then became Durham Regional Hospital's first medical staff president when the hospital opened in 1976. He retired in 2000.

Dr. Culton will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a faithful friend.

Dr. Culton is survived by his sons, Alan Culton (Jeanne) and Julian Culton (Cathy); grandchildren, Alan Culton Jr., Philip Culton, Cobey Culton, Davis Culton and Elizabeth Culton; brother, Julian Culton (Alice); and sister, Gladys Highly (Frank).

A memorial service will be held at Mosaic Church of Durham 2031 West Club Blvd, Durham, N.C. Saturday June 24th, 2017 at 2pm.
