Obituary for Col. Charles Jesse Shaw

DURHAM: Colonel Charles “Jesse” Shaw died peacefully at the Duke Hock Family Pavilion on Friday, March 16, 2018. He was born on February 12, 1919 to the late Edwin Shaw, Sr. and Lettie Parker Shaw.

Col. Shaw graduated from Bragtown High School in Durham. He moved to Richmond, Virginia and worked as a conductor and brakeman for the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company. His life was defined by his dedication to serving God and his country. He was just 23 years old when he enlisted and began service in the United States Army in 1941. He spent a year as a training center unit officer, and he commanded an anti-tank company of thousands of soldiers during the occupation of Japan on Okinawa in WWII. After faithfully and honorably serving his country for 38 years in the US Army, Colonel Shaw retired on February 12, 1979. He will be remembered for his love of God, country, family and friends, his love of the Army, his zest for life, his love of tennis, his sense of humor, his generosity, and his never-ending love and devotion to his beloved wife, Marion.

In addition to his parents, Col. Shaw was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman Shaw, Edwin Shaw Jr., and Larry Shaw; and sister, Florence Hayden. He is survived by his wife, Marion Suggs Shaw; step-children, Steve Suggs (Debbie), Robin Suggs, Terry LaRiviere; step-grandchildren, Steven Suggs Jr. (Amanda), Christine Suggs Brasseaux (Andrew), Asher Chmielnicki (Meghan Blanchard); step-great-grandchildren, Oliver Brasseaux, Emma Suggs, Elora Blanchard; sister, Doris Craig; and many nieces and nephews.

His family will miss his stories, his laughter and his wisdom. They will miss the presence of this wonderful man, but they know that he is at peace in God’s arms. A special thank you to Kamelia Samadi for helping care for Jesse.

A celebration of Jesse’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 19th at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:30. Burial will follow the services at Maplewood Cemetery with full military honors.
