Obituary for Clarence A. Johnson, Jr.

DURHAM: On Thursday, April 19, 2018, Clarence Anthony Johnson Jr., of Durham, NC, was called from this earth to join His Heavenly Father. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family.

Clarence (“Pops”) leaves behind his ten children: Christina Cook (Tim), Kevin Johnson (Robin) Linda Crabtree (David), Carol Bell (Coy), Mary Skok, Bill Johnson (Jennifer), Joanne Ahumada (Mo), Kathleen Johnson, Margaret Haferman (Mike), and Molly Mancuso (Tony) as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clarence was preceded in death by the love of his life and best friend, Judith Frese Johnson, his parents, Clarence Anthony Johnson Sr. and Roberta MacTier Johnson, and his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Lee Johnson, all of Durham, NC.

Clarence graduated from Duke University in 1951. While serving in the Chemical Corp in the US Army, Clarence moved to Baltimore to work for Esso (Exxon) where he met and married Judy. He was later transferred to New Jersey, where he and Judy raised their family until his retirement in 1986. They moved back “home” where he got involved with Kiwanis, prison ministry and various church activities. He and Judy enjoyed traveling, spending time with the Durham High School 47 Club, square dancing, and their weekly visits to Bennett Pointe Grill and Pomodoro. They especially loved spending time with the family. Clarence was the original DIY’er. There wasn’t much he couldn’t create, do, or fix himself. His penchant for advice-giving and problem-solving, his generous nature, and his genuine care and concern for others made him a friend and role model to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A visitation celebrating the lives of Clarence and Judy will take place on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, NC from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 216 Governor Burke Road, Hillsborough, NC on Friday, May 25, 2018, at 10:00 AM followed by interment at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Clarence’s and Judy's memory can be sent to Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ or ALZ of NC.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral Service, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences to www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
