Obituary for Charles "Tony" Anthony Waters

DURHAM: Charles “Tony” Anthony Waters, 78, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at his home in Durham. He was born in Durham, the son of the late Horace Wofford Waters and Sue Barnhill Waters. In addition to his parents, Mr. Waters is also predeceased by his wife, Barbara Simmons Waters.

Tony was an avid golfer and car enthusiast. He made friends everywhere he went with his big smile and sense of humor. He was a member of the Bull City Streetrod Association and attended local cruise-ins with his classic car buddies, and visited local golf courses in the area at least 4 times a week, still a solid golfer after all of these years, shooting lower than his age frequently.

After graduating from Durham High School in 1957, he entered the United States Navy and traveled the Pacific until 1961 on the USS Bon Homme Richard. He worked as a plane mechanic, and ended up being the only mechanic onboard who was trained on the new fighters and bombers for CVG-19, apart of multiple deployments in the late 1950's in the Western Pacific.

Tony married his sweetheart, Barbara Jean Simmons, in 1960 and came back home in 1961 to Durham in time for the birth of his daughter, Felisa. He had a son, Charles A. Waters Jr. a few years later in 1963 and raised his family, always the "cool dad" who listened to the QDR rock radio station and brought his children records home after work.

Tony worked for Xerox for 24 years, having to quit his job just short of retirement to take care of his father, who was dying from Alzheimer's Disease. After the death of his father Horace, Tony took a job for American Airlines, starting in baggage, and working his way up over the years. After the death of his wife Barbara in 1999, Tony retired and took to a simple life of relaxation and golf, frequenting local diner spots like Honey's every night and day. He made friends everywhere he went, and you would always see that white mustache lifted over that big smile. You could find him at local auto shops around Durham, and John May, Herschel Turnage, Tim Tilley, and other local mechanics always loved to see him. He'd sit for hours, just talking about cars and smoking cigarettes all day long. If he wasn’t playing golf or working in the his yard, he was fiddling with one of his classic cars.

Tony is survived by his daughter, Felisa Waters Anderson; son, Charles "Chuck" A. Waters Jr.; sisters, Diana Waters Adkins and Susan Waters Glaser; and grandchildren, Robert Chase Pickett and Lauren Nicole Anderson.
