Obituary for Charles "Charlie" Martin Bass

DURHAM – Charles “Charlie” Martin Bass, 78, of Durham passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 at Duke University Hospital, Durham. Born in Durham, Mr. Bass was the son of the late Elwood Martin Bass and Sara Geneva Bridwell Bass. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Linwood Elwood Bass and John Burney Bass. Mr. Bass was a supervisor with U.N.C. Utilities for 30 years. After his retirement from U.N.C., he continued to work at Hillandale Golf Course for 19 years.

Charles was a deacon at Gorman Baptist Church for many years as well as a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class. He also served as a bus driver for his church and Senior Citizens outings. As an avid supporter of Gorman Christian Academy, he was a bus driver, coach and served on many committees.

Charles is survived by his wife, Brenda C. Bass; a brother, Donald Wayne Bass and wife Patricia; and eleven nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Gorman Baptist Church with Pastor Craig Phelps officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Clements Funeral Home, Durham. Interment will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gorman Baptist Church Christian Academy, 3315 E Geer St, Durham, NC 27704.
