Obituary for Bonnie Keeter Griffin

Mrs. Bonnie Keeter Griffin died on October 19, 2017 following a long illness. She was
born November 7, 1924 in Rutherfordton, NC, the only child of Washington Derwood
Keeter and Zelma Alice Dement Keeter.

Mrs. Griffin attended Durham City schools and Alexander Boarding School in Rutherfordton, N.C. She attended Palm Beach High School in Palm Beach, Florida. She graduated from Croft Business College in 1944. Mrs. Griffin’s working career included office manager at the Durham Chamber of Commerce and a real estate agent for Southland Associates. She graduated from Isles Photography School in Charlotte, NC and owned and operated Cameo Color Photography Studio in Durham. For many years she traveled throughout the United States to teach photography for Hollywood Classic Studios located in Los Angeles. Mrs. Griffin also worked in the Finance Department in City Hall, retiring from City Government in 1992. Mrs. Griffin was an enthusiastic volunteer in organizations that allowed her to give to others. She served on many boards in the city and Raleigh including the Durham Woman’s Club and Durham Regional Hospital Auxiliary for 18 years. In 1998 she was recognized as a Key Volunteer by the Volunteer Center of Greater Durham and the Herald Sun Newspapers. She was appointed by the Governor of North Carolina to serve on the Resource Council for the North Carolina Woman’s Prison in Raleigh and served in that capacity since 1992. Mrs. Griffin was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority and served as Chaplain. She was editor of the Durham Woman’s Club newsletter for 15 years and served on the Executive Board for District VI of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs International.

Bonnie was well known for her love of animals often finding homes for lost cats and dogs. Her generosity and caring was known throughout her lifetime among her friends and club members. She was a member of Watts Street Baptist Church and initiated a casserole ministry for Urban
Ministries. She served on the missions committee of the church.

Bonnie is survived by two sons: Norman H. ‘Skip’ Staples Jr. and wife, Leslie Staples of Westfield, NC; and Benjamin Staples and wife, Brenda Nevidjon of Durham, NC; two grandsons: Graham Russell Staples (wife Julie Staples), and Jameson Nevidjon Staples (husband Justin
LiPuma-Staples), and one great-granddaughter Charlotte Elizabeth Staples. She is also survived by step daughters: Lynne Whitener Brescia and Mary Whitener Holmgren of Wayne, NJ and Claire Whitener Shaw of Colorado Springs, CO.

A visitation will be held in the Gathering Room at Clements Funeral Service, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, NC on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 at 2PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Animal Protection Society of Durham: 2117 E Club Blvd Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704; or the Durham Woman’s Club: 900 S. Duke Street, Durham 27701 are preferred.
