Obituary for Bobby Collins

DURHAM: Dr. Bobby McManus Collins, Sr., 87, died Monday, December 4, 2017, at Carver Living Center in Durham. Dr. Collins was born in Oxford, NC, the son of the late Joel Solomon Collins and Ola Mae McManus Collins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Catherine Collins Maddry, Jo Collins Earp, Bruce Winston Collins, Billie Joel Collins, Edward Eustice Collins, Don Collins, wife, Gail Patrick Boone Collins; and daughter-in-law, Lisa Dixon Collins.

Dr. Collins devoted his life serving others as a father, educator, coach, and loving husband. He dearly loved his siblings and fondly reminisced about time spent with each of them. An attentive listener and story teller, he appreciated and treated everyone with respect. This endeared him to all who knew him. Dr. Collins served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict (1951-1953). Proud and patriotic, he flew the US flag and our country’s Allies flags at his home. He often joked his home could be mistaken for the United Nations.
Dr. Collins worked tirelessly to support his family, but still found the time to pursue and obtain Masters Degrees in Health and Physical Education from Appalachian State University, a Masters in Science Education from Duke University. In 1980, Dr. Collins received his doctorate in Education from Duke University.

Dr. Collins began his teaching and coaching career at Mebane High School in 1960. He always had a passion for educating and coaching young people. In 1962, Dr. Collins became a science teacher and assistant football coach at Northern High School in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Collins remained at Northern until 1965. In 1966, Dr. Collins became a head football coach and science teacher at South Granville High School. It was at South Granville that he and his family were happiest. He spoke of all of his students and student athletes with great pride and joy. In 1970, Dr. Collins returned to Durham County as an Assistant Principal and remained with Durham County schools until retiring in 1990.

Dr. Collins is survived by his daughters: Beverly Collins-Smith (Russ) of Greensboro and Dana Collins Tucker (Jody) of Durham; sons, Bobby McManus Collins, Jr of Greenville and Harold Derek Collins (Tammy) of Semora; special friend, Josephine “Joe” Forkner of Durham; sisters, Vera Collins Walker of Cedar Grove and Jane Collins Kirkland of Chapel Hill; brother, Glen Gary Collins (Betty) of Durham; grandchildren, Dana Publicover (Jim), Darin Saavedra (Ron), Gabrielle and Samuel Tucker; and great-grandchildren, James and Henry Publicover. A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Saturday, December 16th at New Hope Presbyterian Church (4701 NC Highway 86, Chapel Hill, NC 27514). The family is sincerely appreciative of Lynn Gullie, and Judy Byrd, Missy Smith, Shawmennetta Harris, Sophia Jefferson, Cathy Johnson, Riitta Maliki, & the staff at Durham VA Home Based Health Care, Carver Living Center, especially the 400 Hall and PT staff. Dr. Collins received the most compassionate care at these facilities, for which he was grateful. The family would like to thank Pastor Joe Winston, and Pastor Covington for the beautiful prayers they blessed our father with during his transition.

Special request from Dr. Collins family with regards to the memorial service. Please come dressed in your favorite collegiate attire or comfortable clothing. Dad was a believer in higher education and comfort. He was very much a Duke fan and lived the majority of his life dressed in a Duke sweatshirt or t-shirt and athletic pants.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Obies Chapel UHC (2344 Guess Rd, Timberlake, NC 27853) & Mt. Calvary Deliverance Cathedral (231 Lanier Street, PO Box 314, Oxford, NC 27565.)
