Obituary for Bishop Jerry Thomas McBride

DURHAM: Jerry Thomas McBride, 70, died at his home in Durham on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. He was born in Elkin, NC to the late Odell and Ruby Martin McBride.

Mr. McBride is survived by his wife, Deborah McBride; daughters, Sonya Bloomer (Jim), Destiny McBride; sons, Jerry “Jay” Thomas McBride, Jr. (Andrew Loudermilk), Joshua McBride, David McBride; brother, Dan McBride; sisters, Karen Noel (Mike), Sharon Noel (Chuck); grandchildren, Joseph Bloomer, Zachary Bloomer, Victoria Bloomer, Jonathan Bloomer; and great-grandchild, Landon West.

Bishop Jerry McBride made an impact on so many lives. He was a Pentecostal minister , a faithful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, and dear friend. In ministry for over 50 years, He has been a travelling evangelist, pastor, entrepreneur, and mentor to young pastors. Everything he did, everything he was, he wanted to do and be “for the Kingdom.” A man of prayer, he served his Lord and his loved ones with extraordinary faith and confidence.

Jerry possessed a gift of trust. He believed big and dreamed big, encouraging and envisioning the best, not only for himself and his family, but for the churches he served, his friends, and strangers he loved befriending. Finding great joy in nurturing people, and as a true North Carolinian, he had the gift of gab. Always wanting to use his words to build up, whether that meant a sweet text message to a niece or nephew, encouragement to a child or grandchild, a gentle admonition, a prophetic word for a congregation, or a simple “I love you, honey,” Jerry shared his life and God’s love through his words, and he always had time for others. If he was proud of you or loved you, you didn’t have to wonder for a moment whether it was so.

He was also a real original. Sharing wild stories, Jerry had a goofy sense of humor and a flare for crazy ties and cufflinks. He was an inventor and a creator, and always befriended a wide variety of people. Jerry accepted people exactly as they are, with a great generosity of spirit, while still having the boldness to correct, give advice, and share the good news of Jesus with anyone he met. A warm, big-hearted evangelist, a loving family man, and a deeply faithful friend—this is our beloved Jerry McBride. We will miss him dearly in this life and anticipate our heavenly reunion.

A graveside service was conducted 2:00 PM Friday, April 7, 2017 at Markham Memorial Gardens with Pastor Tim Walker and Pastor Chuck Noel officiating. The family received friends Friday, April 7, 2017 from 12-1:30 PM at Clements Funeral Home, Durham.
