Obituary for Betty Jo Coley

DURHAM: Betty Jo Coley, 88, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 at her home in Durham. She was born in Stone, KY, the daughter of the late George and Sylvia Puckett McCloud. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her first husband, Marvin Elwood Harmon; second husband, Archie David Coley; and step-daughter, Tina Coley.

Ms. Coley moved from Kentucky to Lebanon, VA and was a member of First Baptist Church in Lebanon. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School where she was on the championship basketball team with her sisters. She was one of 13 siblings. After moving from Virginia to Maryland, she relocated to Durham in 1977 where she lived the rest of her life. Ms. Coley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family dearly and will be greatly missed.

Ms. Coley is survived by sons, Stephen Harmon (Karen), Michael Harmon; grandchildren, Michelle Harmon, Melody Harmon; great-granddaughter, Gracelynn Clayton; step-sons, Ronnie Coley, David Coley; step-daughters, Terry Vall, Sandy Arnette; sister, Peggy Sue Page; brother, Jim McCloud (Betty Jo); and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22nd at Raleigh National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. at Clements Funeral Service in Durham.

The family would like to thank Ms. Coley’s doctors, Dr. Bob Pennington and his nurse Lynn Blakley; and Dr. Scarlett Bardo. They would also like to extend their gratitude to the Durham County Department of Social Services, Brittany Myers, as well as the staff of Ideal Home Health Care, supervisor Patience Ndikon, and Iva Mulumba, Quanisha Burwell. Also, a special thank you to her youngest son, Michael Harmon who devoted 9 plus years of round-the-clock care by her side at her home up until her death.
