Obituary for Betty G. Eakes

Betty Griffin Eakes, 92, of Raleigh died peacefully on November 19, 2017. Betty was born on April 25, 1925 in Greenville, NC to the late Julia Ellis Griffin and William Lawson Griffin.

After spending her childhood in Selma, NC, Betty met and married the love of her life, Joe O. Eakes, Jr., on June 10, 1944. Betty and Joe made their home in Durham, NC. They were members of Grace Baptist Church for 70 years where Betty’s greatest joy was singing in the church choir. Betty and Joe treasured their retirement years spending time with their family and many great friends at their beloved beach, Salter Path. Betty lived 92 years full of faith and joy teaching us all to appreciate life through the beauty of God’s creation.

Betty is survived by her three children, Bonnie Harper Monson of Raleigh, Joe O. Eakes, III of Durham, and Julie Eakes Ellis of Durham, five grandchildren, Amy Harper Watkins, Melissa Harper Schwab, Nicholas Griffin Eakes, Jessica Merrill McMillan and Kathleen Anna Eakes and four great grandchildren, Harper Watkins, Lauren Schwab, Matthew Schwab and Howell Watkins.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on November 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Durham, NC. The family will receive friends in the parlor after the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Transitions LifeCare at 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
