Obituary for Betty Ann Lallier

DURHAM: Betty Ann Wallen Lallier, 83, died Sunday evening at her home in Croasdaile Village after a period of declining health. She was born in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin on Nov. 8, 1933 to Loren and Kathryn Krohn Wallen. She met her future husband, Keith Lallier, during her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. They had 51 years together, moving often – from New York to Florida to Vermont and many places in between. Betty finished her undergraduate degree and earned a masters’ degree in library science at the University of Maryland in the 1970s.

She loved books, dogs, her grandchildren, and chocolate. She worked for many years as an elementary school librarian and kept her grandchildren supplied with all kinds of wonderful books. Over her life time she rescued several abandoned or mistreated dogs and many around Croasdaile think of her as ‘Hattie’s Mom’, Hattie being her last rescue and devoted friend.
She is survived by two sons and their wives: Chuck and Becky Lallier of Durham and Doug and Tracy Lallier of Englishtown, NJ.; and one son-in-law, Mike Ward of Richmond. Her daughter, Jill Ward, died in July of 2013. Her husband, Keith, died in August 2004.

Betty is also survived by nine grandchildren: Andrew (Allison), Joseph, Scott, Cindy and Kevin Lallier, Shannon (Andrew) Lallier Schoenemann, Jenna, Alec and Kyle Ward. She has one great-grandchild, Christopher Lallier.

A memorial service will be held in the Few Chapel at Croasdaile Village Thursday, October 5th at 3 pm. A reception will follow at Croasdaile Village.

She was a member of Watts Street Baptist Church. Her family would like to thank her friends who kept in touch, came by to visit and talk with her in difficult times. Her family is also very grateful to the staff at Croasdaile who provided such wonderful and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Protection Society of Durham.

The family is under the care of Clements Funeral Service in Durham. Please see online obituary to send condolences at
