Obituary for Anna Bell Sellers

DURHAM: Anna Bell Slate Sellers was born October 9, 1929 to Margaret Ferguson Slate and Hugh Leek Slate in Coalwood, WV. She was the oldest of 4 children (siblings Walter, Mildred, and Mary Helen) and learned the value of hard work early on. She attended Big Creek public school and was the captain of the girls’ basketball team. Upon graduation from high school in 1948, she went to Charleston, WV to attend Capital City Commercial College and Morris Harvey College. She joined a local church youth group where she met her future husband, Roy Lee Sellers. After graduating, she worked at Charleston Printing Company and then the Columbia Gas Company. She and Roy were married at the Sixth Street Methodist Church on November 1, 1952 while Roy was still in the Navy. They settled in Malden, WV where they had 3 children: Roy Lee Jr., Mary Ann, and Mark Allen. They were involved in the school, church, and scouts, and made many life-long friends.
In 1969 the family moved to Belle Mead, NJ where Roy was transferred with Union Carbide. Anna Bell quickly became involved in the community as a home-room mother in the school system and a volunteer for multiple committees at the Montgomery United Methodist Church. She drove those without transportation to doctors’ appointments, helped establish a “Mothers Morning Out” daycare at the church, was an assistant leader for the Girl Scouts, and supported her children’s many activities.
In 1992, she and Roy moved to Bahama, NC to be closer to Mark and Mary Ann. There they would shift into their most cherished role yet: Grandparents. Grandchildren Kristina Alton, Julia Alton, Maggie Sellers, Anna Sellers, Mark Sellers and Franklin Sellers were ceremoniously welcomed into the family. . They joined the Mt. Sylvan Methodist Church where she and Roy participated in many ministries and were active members of the Sylvan Seniors group. They coordinated various programs for the Sylvan Seniors and traveled on many outings with their “senior friends.” They traveled extensively, including to places such as Hawaii, Australia, Alaska, Canada and Central America, but their favorite trips were to visit friends who were located throughout the country. She loved to cook, bake and garden, but by far her favorite hobby was maintaining deep and enduring friendships.
Roy left us in February 2016 and much of the light went out of Anna’s life. After 20 months in assisted living, Anna passed away peacefully at the Hospice Home in Burlington, NC on November 4, 2017. She will be missed dearly by all those whose lives she touched.
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday 2PM at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church in Durham with Rev. Larry Bowden and Rev. Kathie Wilkinson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Mt. Sylvan UMC, 5731 N. Roxboro Rd. Durham, NC, 27712.
