Obituary for Adrienne Janet Robertson Humphrey

DURHAM: Adrienne was born on December 1, 1936 to a self-made businessman, Kenneth Wesley Robertson (1908-2003) and his beautiful wife, Olive Janet Walters Robertson (1911- 1989) in Paterson, NJ. She came of age during the idyllic 1950’s in the “Oranges” of New Jersey, staying in one school district which enabled strong and lifelong friendships. She loved, and always felt protected and loved by, her older brother, who became Dr. David Kenneth Robertson (1935-2015), who retired as a Professor at Montclair State University following a career as an aerospace engineer.

After graduating from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, she married a man as clever as her father and brother, Thomas Andrew Humphrey (1934-2015), and started a family that moved with the whims of Esso and then IBM which took them from New Jersey to Hamburg, Germany, to Cleveland for graduate work for Thomas, to Houston TX for NASA’s Gemini program, followed by Honolulu, Hawaii and ultimately Gaithersburg, MD.

It was in Maryland that her career as a Registered Nurse began with night shifts in the 70’s at Holy Cross Hospital and learning every specialty care area as a Float Nurse. She retired from Montgomery General Hospital in 1996 with many friends and admirers.

She leaves her two daughters, Sharon Ivy (Jim) and Leslie Mason (Gary), her granddaughter, Shannon J. Hochman, her nephew Jeffrey Robertson (Ruby), and her niece, Jill Richards (Brian). She also leaves behind her cherished sister-in-law, Carole Robertson and friends, Evie Kowtko, Carol Purcell and Sarah Allnut.

Following a 2011 injury, Adrienne moved to Bahama, NC, where Leslie and Gary were always nearby.

Adrienne died December 23, 2017 as a result of a lightening fast case of pneumonia, with Leslie at her side.

She will be remembered for her charm and sparkle, and dedication to ironed shirts and pretzel availability.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 PM on Wednesday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 PM at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
